Simple Valentines Day Chocolate Bark

Ingredients for this Valentine Chocolate bark recipe

This great recipe is made with very simple ingredients:

  • Melted chocolate. Use the type of chocolate of your choice: dark chocolate, bittersweet chocolate or milk chocolate, plus white chocolate for swirling on top. I suggest using chocolate bars instead of chocolate chips for best results (more info below, on the expert tips section)
  • Oreo Cookies. I used golden Oreos, but you can chose any cookie of your choice
  • Festive chocolate. Any Valentine’s day candy works
  • Valentine’s sprinkles. Use any Valentine’s day themed sprinkles of your choice
  • Freeze-dried strawberries. These give flavor and color to this delicious treat. Just crush them roughly with your fingers and sprinkle them on top

How to make this sweet treat

Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and set aside.

Next, melt your white and semi-sweet chocolate. For the microwave method, place 3/4 of your chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and heat the chocolate in medium power in 30-second intervals, until your chocolate is nearly melted. Remove from the microwave and stir vigorously with a rubber spatula. Add the remaining 1/4 of your chocolate and microwave in intervals of 5 seconds, stirring between each interval, until chocolate is just melted.

For the double boiler method, use a glass bowl or a heat proof bowl that fits over a pot. Add a couple of inches of water and heat until water just starts to boil. Place the heat proof bowl on top, making sure it’s not touching the water, turn off the heat and add 3/4 of the chocolate, stirring until completely melted. Remove from the heat, add the rest of the chocolate and stir until chocolate melts. Place on top of the boiling water if you find chocolate is not completely melted.

Pour the melted semi-sweet chocolate into your prepared cookie sheet and spread using a spatula into an even layer. Pour the melted white chocolate on top, either spooning it into dollops on top of the dark chocolate layer, or simply pour making an S shape. Use a toothpick to make the white chocolate swirls.

Immediately, add the Oreo cookies, chocolate, sprinkles and dry strawberries. Refrigerate until completely set, break into pieces and enjoy!

Does Chocolate Bark need to be tempered?

Ideally, yes. Chocolate, when tempered, has a beautiful glossy finish and snaps when broken into pieces. It also keeps longer at room temperature and sets more quickly.

Expert tips for the perfect Valentine’s day treat

  • Use chocolate bars cut into equally-sized small pieces instead of chocolate chips. Chocolate chips are made to hold their shape when heated, so they are not the best option for this dessert.
  • If using the double boiler method to melt your chocolate, make sure no water seeps in. Moisture is the enemy of chocolate, keep it dry at all times!
  • White chocolate hardens pretty quickly, so after melted, work quickly to swirl it around and adding all of the toppings.

Add-ons and topping variations for this Valentine’s day bark

You can customize this homemade chocolate bark any way you want. Here are a few ideas:

  • Use candy hearts or conversation hearts to top your bark instead (or with) the m&m’s
  • You can use pink candy melts or a drop of red food coloring for melted pink chocolate instead of white
  • Use any festive candy sprinkles or heart sprinkles instead of the Valentines non pareils
  • Sweet and salty is always a good idea! Pretzel pieces will do the trick
  • Not a fan of golden Oreos? use chocolate Oreos or chocolate wafers instead!
