What can you use instead of Ice Cream in a Milkshake?
Have you ever been craving a milkshake, and had the greatest idea of making it at home?
Decidedly, you go into your kitchen, grab all of the ingredients, and suddenly you realize you are out of ice cream! (Oops!)
We’ve got you covered! this recipe uses no ice cream but still makes a creamy strawberry milkshake.
We used heavy cream, whole milk, and frozen strawberries to emulate that perfect sweet, frozen, and creamy texture you expect with any milkshake.
Other ingredients you can use to thicken your milkshake include yogurt, crème fraiche, coconut cream, nut butters, oats, avocado, ice cubes, and any frozen fruit of your choice.
Ingredients you’ll need for this fresh strawberry Milkshake
There are only 7 basic ingredients to make this original recipe. You can find them in any grocery store!
- Heavy whipping cream. Full fat is a must! this will help make a creamier shake.
- Full-fat milk. Don’t substitute for low-fat milk! the amount of fat determines how creamy your milkshake will be.
- Granulated sugar. This will make your shake sweet and delicious!
- Vanilla extract. Good quality vanilla extract helps enhance all other flavors
- Frozen strawberries. When added to the milkshake, they provide the ideal thickness and frozen texture; plus, they give the strawberry flavor
- Whipped cream. You can make your own whipped cream or just use store-bought. For this recipe, I whipped 1/2 Cup chilled heavy cream with 1/2 tablespoon granulated sugar until stiff peaks formed
- Dry freeze strawberries. These are optional as a garnish for your milkshake. They will help enhance the strawberry taste and its aroma.

How to make a strawberry milkshake without Ice Cream
This recipe has literally 2 steps to it. It’s so simple that you’ll be making it on repeat in the hot summer months!
First, blend the cream, milk, sugar, and vanilla extract together until well combined. Add the frozen strawberries and blend until just combined.
Do not blend too much or your shake might become less thick and frozen than desired.
Serve in a tall glass, top with whipped cream, dry freeze strawberry powder, and a strawberry on the rim of your glass. Enjoy cold!
Substitutions for this easy strawberry milkshake
There are a few substitutions you can make to customize your drink according to your needs:
- For a vegan strawberry shake use non-dairy, plant milk and cream instead of whole milk and heavy cream. You can use coconut milk, almond milk, cashew milk, oat milk, or any plant-based milk of your choice! You can use coconut cream instead of the heavy cream.
- A sugar-free Strawberry milkshake can be made by using any sweetener of choice instead of the granulated sugar. This will make a sugar-free, guilt-free version of your drink!
- If you only have fresh strawberries at hand, use them instead of the frozen strawberries and add 1 1/2 Cups of ice cubes.
- For a healthy strawberry milkshake, use maple syrup to sweeten your shake, coconut milk instead of cow’s milk, coconut cream instead of heavy cream, and add 1 tablespoon of chia seeds
Variations for different flavors
- Strawberry banana milkshake: Add 1 frozen banana additional to the rest of the ingredients and blend with the frozen strawberries
- Strawberry Ice Cream Milkshake: Add 1 Cup of strawberry ice cream and reduce the amount of strawberries to 1 Cup. Drizzle with strawberry syrup on top.
- Chocolate Strawberry Milkshake: Drizzle glass with chocolate syrup, add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder, and drizzle with chocolate syrup on top of your whipped cream. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or chocolate sprinkles on top
- Strawberry peach milkshake: Add 1 frozen peach along with the frozen strawberries and blend with the rest of the ingredients
- Strawberry pineapple milkshake: Add 1 additional cup of frozen pineapple to the rest of the ingredients and blend with the frozen strawberries
Expert tips for the perfect strawberry milkshake
- Use full-fat milk instead of low-fat milk for a creamier texture. Because of the amount of fat, the type of milk makes a difference in the outcome of your shake!
- Frozen strawberries make for an “ice cream-like” texture instead of fresh strawberries. This will help balance the lack of ice cream in your shake
- Be careful not to blend too much your shake, or it might become too thin.
- Use a high-powder blender for best results.
How can I store my leftover strawberry milkshake?
You can store any leftover milkshake in the fridge, covered.
Because the frozen strawberries will thaw, the icy texture on your shake will not be the same. For this reason, this recipe tastes better right after it’s made.
How long can my milkshake last refrigerated?
Your milkshake will last for up to 2 days covered and refrigerated.
How can I know my milkshake went bad?
The smell test is the best way to find out! An unpleasant smell tells you your shake is not good anymore.
Do not consume after 2 days of being refrigerated!
