What is Maca?
Maca is an ancient Peruvian plant grown in the Peruvian Andes.
Its most edible part is the root, which is generally dried and consumed in powdered form.
It is highly nutritious, low in fat, and contains a fair amount of fiber. It’s also high in vitamin C, copper, and iron.
You can find different brands of Maca root powder online and in specialty shops.

Ingredients needed for this Maca Latte recipe
This recipe includes natural ingredients and superfood powders to make it a healthier version of a regular latte.
- Milk: Whether you choose vegan options like coconut milk or almond milk for a dairy-free version or go with regular dairy milk, it provides the creamy base for your maca latte.
- Maca Powder: This is a powder made from maca root. It adds a unique earthy flavor and is often used for its potential benefits, such as boosting energy and helping with hormonal balance. In a maca latte, it imparts a subtle nutty flavor and is considered a natural supplement.
- Coconut Sugar: Coconut sugar is used to sweeten the latte. It offers a mild, sweet flavor with a hint of coconut, adding a touch of sweetness to your drink. It’s considered a healthier alternative to refined sugar.
- Cinnamon: Cinnamon is a warming spice that adds flavor to the latte. It can provide a comforting, slightly sweet taste with a hint of heat, making your maca latte more aromatic and flavorful.
- Vanilla Extract: Vanilla extract contributes a rich and sweet aroma to your latte. It enhances the overall flavor profile, making the drink more inviting and enjoyable by adding a hint of vanilla sweetness.

Add-ins and substitutions for this golden maca latte
- Coconut Sugar: If you don’t have coconut sugar on hand, you can substitute it with pure maple syrup or a bit of honey. These alternatives will still provide a natural sweetness to your latte.
- Maca Coffee: To turn your maca latte into a coffee-flavored version, simply add a shot of espresso. This will give your latte a rich coffee taste while retaining the maca’s health benefits.
- Chocolate Maca: If you want a chocolate twist, mix in some cocoa powder. It will add chocolate flavor to your maca latte, creating a different flavor profile.
- Coconut Maca: To infuse a hint of coconut flavor, stir in a tablespoon of coconut oil (preferably MCT oil). This will provide healthy fats and antioxidant properties.
- Green Tea Maca: For a green tea-infused maca latte, steep a green tea bag in your hot milk for about 3 minutes, then add the rest of your maca latte ingredients. This will give your latte a soothing green tea flavor along with the benefits of maca.
- Matcha Maca Latte: Add 1 teaspoon of ceremonial-grade Matcha powder for a great alternative to the regular Maca Latte.
These add-ins and substitutions offer a variety of flavors and options to customize your maca latte to your liking. Whether you prefer sweeter, coffee-infused, chocolatey, coconutty, or green tea flavors, you can easily tailor your latte to your taste preferences.
How to make this delicious Maca latte recipe
This healthy recipe is so simple that it’ll take you only around 15 minutes to finish it.
Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat. You can use a handheld frother at this point to create foam in your milk.
Add the rest of the ingredients: maca in powder form, coconut sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract, and mix until all of the ingredients are well combined. Pour into a cup immediately.
You can enjoy it hot or, if you want it cold, add ice cubes and enjoy it cool.
How to store any leftover Maca drink
If you have any maca latte left after you’ve had your fill, just pop it into an airtight container and store it in the fridge. It should stay good for up to three days.
When you’re ready to have it again, you’ve got a couple of options. You can gently heat it up to your preferred drinking temperature for a warm latte, or if you’re in the mood for something cooler, you can have it straight from the fridge.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which type of maca (or macca) powder should I use — raw, gelatinized, or roasted?
You can experiment. Gelatinized maca is more processed (heated under pressure) and some people find it easier to dissolve and digest. Raw maca is more “straight from the root” but may clump more, so extra whisking or blending helps. Roasted maca can have a deeper, nuttier flavor.
Choose based on availability and your flavor preferences.
What’s the ideal temperature when heating the almond milk?
You want it warm enough to bring out flavors and allow foaming, but not boiling. Around 140-160 °F (60-70 °C) is a safe sweet spot (i.e. steaming but not scalding). Avoid overheating, which can cause separation or change flavor.
Can I incorporate coffee or espresso (i.e. make it a “dirty” macca latte)?
Yes — many recipes call for a shot of espresso or brewed coffee added to the macca mixture. It gives a caffeine boost and layers flavor. Just make sure that the heat levels are compatible (i.e. don’t pour boiling coffee into cold milk).
Can I double or batch-make the latte mixture ahead of time?
Yes — you can scale up the dry/“base” mix (macca powder + spices + sweetener) and store it in a sealed container. When ready, you simply whisk it into almond milk. However, once mixed with liquid, it’s best consumed relatively soon (within a few hours) to minimize separation.
Can I add other powders (e.g. cacao, matcha, turmeric) along with macca?
Yes, many people blend complementary powders.
You can also try adding cacao, turmeric, cinnamon, or adaptogen blends. Just keep in mind that more powders increase the chance of grittiness, so whisking becomes more critical.

This was actually quite good. I loved the flavor. I didn’t have coconut sugar so I used Stevia and I can’t stand over a stove so I just heated my milk in the microwave then added it to my Vitamix with all the ingredients and blended away. I love it. My new favorite to dry with maybe coconut milk next time, maybe some nutmeg and or cloves for Christmas. Wow, at least you gave me something more to think about.
Thank you very much for this recipe.
